An Outdoorsman For All Seasons
Johnny Thorpe- An Outdoorsman For All Seasons
by Jessica Kane
Standing in his dirt driveway, Johnny Thorpe peered out from under his cowboy hat as he brushed paint onto a totem pole he recently carved. Nearby, two silver foxes with bushy tails were slumbering in a large cage in the afternoon sun. Johnny has been a professional fur trapper since he was 15 years old. Since Harry Truman was in the White House sipping whisky. He's considered one of the top ten fur trappers in the country – without a doubt one of the most experienced - and held the New York State bobcat bounty record for six years running. He'll be 75 on August 1st, but you wouldn’t know it. “I don’t have much wrong with me,” he said, a hint of a smile in his calm blue eyes. "You'd have a hard time keeping up with me in the woods.” Johnny lives largely independent of the prevailing consumerist culture, making his way through life off Good Mother Earth. In between trapping seasons, Johnny Thorpe has done everything from carving totem poles and designing leather belts (tanning the cowhides himself) to treasure hunting, ginseng hunting, mining gold, and horseshoeing. Adirondack Dick: The Illustrated Life of Richard K. "Dick" Wood 1895-1977
By Scot H Dahms
Adirondack Dick: The Illustrated Life of Richard K. "Dick" Wood vividly captures the life of Dick, a 20th-century outdoorsman whose talents in trapping, hunting, fishing, writing, and photography come alive across 310 pages. The book follows Dick’s adventures, from his work with the Triumph Trap Company (1917–1921) to trapping in the Adirondacks, Tennessee, and beyond, alongside figures like EJ Dailey. Over 260 vintage photographs, many previously unpublished, enrich the narrative, showcasing the rugged beauty of his world.
Wood's passion for hunting shines in tales of deer and duck pursuits, particularly along the Tennessee River, while his love for dry fly fishing for trout, mentored by Willard Spenser Jr., animates his Smoky Mountains escapades. A 1925 motor camping trip across twelve states and a canoe journey through Minnesota’s Superior National Forest highlight his adventurous spirit, painting a vivid picture of early American travel.
Beyond the wild, Dick Wood's legacy as a writer for 77 magazines, including Field and Stream, and his role in founding the Outdoor Writers Association of America, add depth. With over 300 articles cataloged, the book celebrates his literary impact. Though dense with names at times, the compelling storytelling and stunning visuals make this a must-read for outdoor and history enthusiasts.
